Reading period: We accept submissions from October 1 through May 31. We don’t accept submissions during the summer, except for our flash fiction contest.
Fiction: We welcome well-written fiction of (almost) all lengths, from flash and short-short works to full-length stories (up to about 7000 words). We are open to most genres and genre-blending fiction, but are not interested in anything formulaic. We love stories with a strong sense of language, emotional richness and vivid characters. We don’t publish children’s stories, fan fiction, or stories whose sole purpose is to impart a moral lesson or push a political viewpoint.
Creative Nonfiction: We publish memoir, personal reflection, nature and travel writing and other creative nonfiction, including excerpts from longer works. We are looking for work with a strong personal voice rather than journalism or “just the facts” articles.
Poetry: We look for poetry with a rich use of language, strong imagery and something at stake emotionally. Free verse, prose poetry, lyric poetry and traditional poetic forms are all welcome; singsong rhyme is not.
Other/mixed forms: We are open to one-act plays, stories told in graphic novel form, and works that don’t fall into traditional fiction/nonfiction/poetry categories.
New Voices: We seek to publish outstanding writing by new writers, ages 13 through 22 or high school or college students. Submissions in this category can be in any genre. If you are submitting as a new writer, please include your age and school information.
Photography: We welcome strong black and white or color photography as well as collage and mixed photography-artwork forms.
TWO WAYS TO SUBMIT:
Online submissions: Send all work to submissions@newportreview.org. Please use your last name and the category of work you are sending (fiction, poetry, etc.) in the subject line of the email. Include a brief biography (up to 150 words). You may send your work in the body of the email, if it is short, OR as an attachment. We will read ONLY text files saved in Word or Rich Text Format. For photos, use a JPEG format.
With prose, it is helpful to use a block paragraph style (spaces between paragraphs) rather than indents, as this is how we format stories for web layout. Please make sure your name and contact info are on the attached file so we don’t lose your information after the file is downloaded. You will be notified by email about the status of your work.
Postal submissions: You may send your work by mail to: Newport Review, P.O. Box 65, Warren, RI 02885. Please include an ATTN line so we can route your work to fiction, nonfiction or poetry editors. Our preference is to recycle work we do not accept; please include a standard-sized self-addressed stamped envelope for our reply. If you do want your entire manuscript returned, include an envelope large enough to mail it back and correct postage.
We will try to respond to all submissions within three to four months.
Payment: Unfortunately, we do not have enough funding to pay our non-contest contributors at this time; we hope this can change in the future. If you would like to help Newport Review in our mission to support writers and artists and bring vibrant new work to the online community, please send your tax-deductible contributions to Newport Review, P.O. Box 65, Warren, RI 02885. We are thankful for contributions of any amount, large or small.
