About Us
Newport Review is an independent online journal of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and visual art. The magazine was founded by award-winning poet and writer Michele Cooper. Newport Review began publication in Newport, Rhode Island in the 1980s, and published as a print journal through the 1990s, most often annually. Guest editors included Stuart Blazer and Susan Grant. Later, after a short hiatus, the magazine reappeared as the bimonthly 4 x 4/The Newport Review, a four-page mini-zine focusing on poetry, flash fiction and black & white photography. Kathryn Kulpa came on board as an assistant editor around 2001 and became the managing editor in 2007, when Michele Cooper stepped down.
In our web manifestation, we publish innovative, language-rich flash fiction, prose poetry and poetry, as well as longer works: short stories, novel excerpts, one-act plays and creative nonfiction. We also welcome visual art: both black & white and color photography, graphic stories (or “comix,” if you prefer) and original artwork.
We sponsor the annual Newport Review Flash Fiction Contest. Winning stories receive prizes and publication. We are also planning a New Voices Contest for younger writers, ages 13-22. Check this site for announcements about this.
The Newport Review is a nonprofit organization, supported in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and by individual donations. We gratefully welcome tax-deductible contributions in any amount.
