Submission Guidelines

Reading period: We accept submissions from September 1 through May 31. We don’t accept submissions during the summer, except for our flash fiction contest.

Fiction: We welcome well-written fiction of (almost) all lengths, from flash and short-short works to full-length stories (up to about 7000 words). We are open to most genres and genre-blending fiction, but are not interested in anything formulaic. We love stories with a strong sense of language, emotional richness and vivid characters. We don’t publish children’s stories, fan fiction, or stories whose sole purpose is to impart a moral lesson or push a political or religious viewpoint. Please send one short story (1000 words+) at a time. You may send up to two flash fiction pieces (up to 1000 words).

Creative Nonfiction: We publish memoir, personal reflection, nature and travel writing and other creative nonfiction, including excerpts from longer works. We are looking for work with a strong personal voice rather than journalism or “just the facts” articles. Please send one nonfiction piece at a time.

Poetry: We look for poetry with a rich use of language, strong imagery and something at stake emotionally. Free verse, prose poetry, lyric poetry and traditional poetic forms are all welcome; singsong rhyme is not. You may send up to three poems at a time.

Other/mixed forms: We are open to one-act plays, graphic stories and other works that don’t fall into traditional fiction/nonfiction/poetry categories.

New Voices: We seek to publish outstanding writing by new writers, ages 13 through 22 or high school or college students. Submissions in this category can be in any genre. If you are submitting as a new writer, please include your age and school information.

Art and Photography: We welcome strong black and white or color photography as well as paintings, collage and mixed photography-artwork forms. All work must be in a format suitable for web display.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

Submit Online: Send all work to submissions (at) newportreview.org. Please use your last name and the category of work you are sending (fiction, poetry, etc.) in the subject line of the email. You may include a brief biography. You may send your work in the body of the email, if it is short, OR as an attachment. We will read ONLY text files saved in Word or Rich Text Format.

With prose, it is helpful to use a block paragraph style (spaces between paragraphs) rather than indents, as this is how we format stories for web layout. Please make sure your name and contact info are on the attached file so we don’t lose your information after the file is downloaded. You will be notified by email about the status of your work.

For artwork, please query and include 2-4 sample photos or artworks as JPEG attachments.

We regret that we are no longer able to accept postal submissions.

We will try to respond to all submissions within three to four months. We do accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that you notify us immediately if a piece is accepted elsewhere.

Payment: Unfortunately, we do not have enough funding to pay our non-contest contributors at this time; we hope this can change in the future.
